It’s impossible to deny saying something stupid these days with everything you say and do recorded online for others to twist, misinterpret, laugh at, and throw back at you.
I have to admit, I take the easy way out and stay away from anything controversial online because of the Internet Rage Factory’s complete inability to handle sarcasm or any form of nuance whatsoever… and my complete inability to not be sarcastic or to resist poking fun at people who take themselves too seriously (which seems like pretty much everyone online these days).
It wasn’t always like this, of course.
My favourite Winston Churchill quote is, “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.” While this has never been a truer statement than now, it’s also fairly likely that this quote is not even his, despite the fact that he was one of the most recorded people of his day.
I miss plausible deniability.
